Maple Creek, Saskatchewan: G. E. Fleming, Circa 1920s. Mounted Photograph. A 7.5 x 9.5 inch wide photograph of the circa 1920s Maple Creek Hockey Team, pasted onto the photographers blind stamped ("G.E. Fleming Maple Creek SA.") 12 x 15.5 inch wide card mount, with each player, their position, and the team manager's names printed in black letterpress below the photo. The teams Dog Mascot "Pete" is seen here front and center captured by the photographer proudly wearing his teams kit. Both the photo and mat are badly stained, scuffed and creased, with heavy wear, multiple holes, some loss at bottom edge of the mount and a puncture near center, most from being wall-mounted at some time. Still, the photo retains much interesting historical hockey intel, such as the Maple Creek uniform and team crest, the chest ribbons worn by the management, and the players seemingly primitive (with some perhaps even homemade) hockey equipment. The Regina Leader newspaper of Monday, Dec. 8th, 1924 records that "M. Graham" was made the Honorary President of the Maple Creek Hockey Club and, with Graham being shown in this photo as "M. Graham, (Mgr.)" We date this pictorial record to circa that date - though it may date earlier, as all of Fleming's institutionally held photos date exclusively to the early 1900s. The rarity of this Canadian Prairie hockey team photo, here transcends its rather rough condition - with no other Maple Creek hockey team photos located in any institutional holdings or collections that date as early as this exemplar appears to. We also note that the player "N. L. Robson" who is shown in this photo as playing "point" - may be the same Norman L. Robson that was a prominent hotelier which owned and managed the Commercial Hotel in Maple Creek during the early 1900s. Robson also ran as the Liberal Party candidate for the Maple Creek provincial electoral district in the 1912 Saskatchewan general election, so this image may very well date earlier than our 1920s surmise.
