[Winnipeg, Manitoba] Postcards of Prairie Steamships S.S. Bonnitoba and S.S. Winnitoba
Winnipeg, MB: Lewis Benjamin Foote, 1909-10. Postcard. Two early and rare Foote promotional litho. cards of the short-lived S.S. Bonnitoba and S.S. Winnitoba. Both cards are postally unused, with the steamship company's back stamp of "Hyland Navigation and Trading Co. / Winnipeg... 191...". One photo is credited "Foote Photo Wpg” on the front, and the other is uncredited. But, as they both have the same white borders, back stamps, card stock, pointy rectangular shaped caption spaces, and appear to be of the same vessel, we attribute them both to Foote. The Dining Saloon card is unmarked and is at least very good ; the Saloon on Hurricane Deck card (MHSA attributes this photo to S.S. Winnitoba) has light soil and a thin tide line stain at left edge, with a card game tally in pencil on verso titled "We" and "They" in pencil, likely indicating shipboard use by the original purchaser while a passenger onboard and thus, a very good card. At Least Very Good. Item #5620
The card with Foote's signature at the lower right was not found by us in any database, auction record or institutional holdings. Ask about the other Foote cards of S.S. Bonnitoba and S.S. Winnitoba we currently have available.
