[Surfing] The Story of Hawaii. 1930s Travel Guide w. Ruth Taylor White Cartoon Maps & Decorations

Honolulu, HI: Hawaii Tourist Bureau, [1930s]. Ruth Taylor White. Paperback. An uncommon promotional travel guide for the then US Territory of Hawaii, which includes four "cartograph" maps, and illustrations by the famous pictorial cartographer, Ruth Taylor White. Saddle stapled wraps, 4to size (12 inches tall), pp. 31, [32], illustrated throughout, foot of terminal leaf w. "Printed in Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. by Honolulu Star Bulletin, Ltd." Volume covers are somewhat faded and toned w. minor creasing and a modest bump to foot of spine, the interior illustrations, text, and the four cartoon maps (Hawaii, Maui, Oahu and Kauai) by White, all maintain color that still "pops", and are in fine, unmarked condition. Hawaii had a federal census every ten years after 1930, so this travel guide, which references the 1930 census, can be no later than 1939, but likely dates earlier. Near Fine. Item #5606

In 1930, White spent five weeks in Hawaii working on a commission for the Hawaii Tourist Bureau, likely when she created these maps, or very shortly thereafter. Ref. Picturing America : The Golden Age of Pictorial Maps (2017) by Stephen Hornsby.
