[Cloverdale, BC] 1890s Photo of Edwin Carncross & Co. Real Estate Building

Cloverdale, BC: n.p., circa 1890. Mounted Photograph. Three Surrey, British Columbia businessmen stand proudly in front of their relatively new looking establishment in the agricultural town of Cloverdale, B.C., captured here on a misty day between rain showers, circa 1890. Date of 1890 inferred from a surreyhistory dot ca walking tour article, but may date earlier, viz. "1885 saw the arrival of Edwin Carncross. Early farming, plus employment as Municipal Clerk, evolved into Carncross Insurance. Brother Charles and Fabian Hugh joined the Co. along with Frank McKinnon. Both brothers left to operate other businesses, and the Co. changed its name to Hugh & McKinnon. Alan Davidson joined the firm, and by 1977 the Company had 125 staff members. Expanding to White Rock, Langley, Vancouver and Fort St. John, service included Insurance, Real Estate, conveyance, Mortgages, Finance and Investments. They were also the registered office of the Surrey Dyking District. The Company was sold in 1978, ending 93 years of continuous service to the community." Photo measures 4-5/8 x 6-5/8 inches wide and is pasted onto an 8x10 inch wide mount w. 3 pin holes along upper edge, verso w. a barely discernible, faint rubber stamp, possibly the photographers. Near Fine. Item #5573
