[Kootenay] Photo of Cranbrook's New Gyro Pool in 1930
Cranbrook, BC: Baker Studio. Loose Photograph. A very early look at Cranbrook's new Gyro swimming pool, likely taken sometime during it's opening year of 1930, or possibly in early 1931, as construction had not yet progressed to the point of that which can be seen in a RPPC image held by CBIRH as ID 0006.0019, and dated 1931. A sepia toned gelatin silver photograph, taken by a professional photographer, having their blind stamp "NELSON / CRANBROOK" at lower right corner, and their back stamp "Nelson Studio Cranbrook B.C." on the verso. Interestingly, in the sky portion of the photo, there is some faint offsetting noticeable from a typewritten article (which must have lain pressed against the photo for many years) about the pool, which comments in part (in mirror reverse) on a "badly drawn red tin sign" for the "Dressing Room" - along some other barely discernible, but interesting comments. Photo measures 5x7 inches wide, with minor creases and a 1/4 inch closed tear in the white border of the upper edge, not affecting image. Nelson Studio was operated between 1925-1939 in Cranbrook by Manfred Nelson. Ref. Mattison, Camera Workers, 1858-1950. Near Fine. Item #5505
A charming and historical photo of what was then said to be, the largest pool in western Canada. With the typed text of the swimming pool article being partially visible for reading (in mirror reverse) and the many vintage autos - which include a newly minted Ford Model A Coupe (lower right corner) adding additional interest to the photo. Cranbrook's Gyro pool no longer exists, having reverted to Parkland in 1969. Ref. Lost Kootenays, p. 81. Brighton & Nesteroff.
