[Kootenay Viewbook] Life and Agricultural Opportunities at Edgewood w. Maps & 1916 Burton Farmers' Co-Op Annual Statement

London: E. & H. Lumley (as agents for A.D & J.W. Ford). Paperback. Many pioneers immigrated deep into the mountainous Kootenay valleys of British Columbia, Canada, to farm fruit at the turn of the last century. These two ephemeral items help to document the promotional efforts and the ongoing business, of the Arrow Lakes fruit trade. (1) The Burton Farmers' Co-Operative Association Fourth Annual Statement, dated Burton, B.C., Jan. 20th, 1916 - being a single sheet, printed on watermarked paper measuring 11 x 8-3/8 inches wide, on recto only, with "W. H. Jones - Printer" and the Union bug printed near bottom edge. Statement is toned with some stains, closed tears and minor creasing. (2) A circa 1910 Real Estate Sales Brochure / Prospectus ; cover title is "Fruit Farming at Edgewood British Columbia" proper title is "British Columbia Life and Agricultural Opportunities at Edgewood : Town Lots and Fruit Lands from Five Acres and Upwards May be Acquired" with pub. date of 1910 taken from text on p. 14 "October 1st, 1910" and p. 16 "...the Government built, last year, what is perhaps the finest wharf of its kind in the Province." (M. Milne in "Just Where is Edgewood?" [1991] dates the wharf construction to 1908, see p. 28) String bound card wraps, title stamped in gilt onto both covers with pastedown photo vignette at center of upper cover, oblong 24mo size (5.5 inches tall), pp. [2], 3-27, [28 - colophon, having the printers device & credit], illustrated with seven full page, B&W halftone photo reproductions (plus the vignette on upper cover), two in-text maps and one color fold-out map titled "Plan of Edgewood" - locating 50 lots with their sizes and prices, along with the government wharf and a street plan of Edgewood. Published and distributed by the Lumleys in England - who acted as agents for the Fords - to entice English settlers and investors to purchase lots in The Edgewood Estates. Edgewood Viewbook : Fine / Burton Financial Statement : Good. Item #5000

A rare pair of Kootenay items, with no copies of the promotional viewbook located by OCLC (we did find a very truncated version of part of the text in "Just Where is Edgewood?") and a single copy of a later, different promo booklet "Fruit farming in British Columbia" (1911) held at UBC Rare Books & Special Collections. No copies of the 1916 The Burton Farmers' Co-Operative Association Fourth Annual Statement were found online. Neither item located in "Kootenaiana" (1976) edited by R.J. Welwood.
