[Alcoholics Anonymous] "Band of Hope" c. 1914 Temperance Ribbon
n.p. Band of Hope, 1914. One of many early precursors to Alcoholics Anonymous, the Band of Hope was a church based social movement organized in the UK in 1847 to keep poor and lower class young children off Gin and other hard liquors. The movement later spread to the US as part of the Temperance Movement. A small collection of cloth badges, consisting of one "Band of Hope" ribbon, one crown, one striped arm band and one striped hat band. We are uncertain as to the actual purpose and significance of these items, however, as they were found together, suggest that they were possibly meant to be worn at public gatherings to show a wearers commitment to sobriety. Fine. Item #4966
The Band of Hope temperance society still exists in the UK today as Hope UK.
