1906 Photos of Banff, Lake Louise and the Canadian Rockies
n.p. 1906. Most Canadian Rockies photos from this period were done by professional photographers hired by the head of the CPR, William Van Horne, who once famously said "Since we can't export the scenery, we will have to import the tourists" - making this early collection of "imported tourist" vernacular images, uncommon in commerce. Fourteen gelatin silver photographs of Banff, Lake Louise (Laggan), the Rockies, and points along the way. Photos measure c. 3 x 3.25 inches wide, and are all loosely slipped in back-to-back into double-sided card leaves (all captioned in black fountain pen ink) and measure 4.5 x 5.5 inches wide. Photos with varying degrees of toning, focus and fading, card leaves are somewhat toned, more so at edges. Very Good. Item #3520
An historically interesting group of amateur Canadian Rockies tourism photos, documenting the area as it appeared in 1906. n.b. It is interesting to note that a buffalo in the buffalo herd photo is marked with an "X" and is captioned "Sir Donald" - the dominant head of the imported buffalo herd. The herd was donated by Donald Smith (Lord Strathcona) in 1898 and the buffalo named "Sir Donald", died in 1909.
