Al Purdy (1918 – 2000) wrote for well over 50 years and has been referred to as Canada's "unofficial poet laureate". He was a friend and contemporary of the Beat writer Charles Bukowski, who once said of him "I don't know of any good living poets. But there's this tough son of a bitch up in Canada that walks the line." wiki. And Lawrence of course, speaks for himself.
