Rachel Carson's first nature story - My Favorite Recreation - was written when she was just 14 years old and is published here in the July, 1922 issue of St. Nicholas Magazine shortly after she turned 15. It tells of her explorations "... with a lunch-box, a canteen, a note-book, and a camera." while out wandering among the Pennsylvania hills. Also of note in the story is the inclusion of this ardent nature observer's favorite bird, the Wood Thrush. Ref. Lear (1998).
