[Alberta Politics] "King Ralph" Klein - Inaugural 1980 Calgary Mayoral Election Run Placard
Calgary, AB: Progressive Conservative Party, 1980. Placard. This is the earliest piece of Klein electioneering ephemera we have seen available in commerce. A civic election placard printed with "IT'S TIME! - IT'S TIME! / RALPH KLEIN / For MAYOR". We place this placard to Klein's impromptu 1980 Calgary Mayoral entry into civic politics, as his later 1983 & 1986 re-election materials (inc. pin-back buttons) carry "re-elect" or "re-election Committee" statements (ref. U of A Depository Library JS 1731.4 A1 K59 1986). Placard measures 7 x 22 inches wide and is printed in black ink onto medium weight orange-colored card with "Printed by Miller Printing 1972 Ltd." next to the union label "Allied Printing Trades Council, Calgary" at lower right. Minor soil, a touch of edge wear and a single vertical crease, else a fine example. Near Fine. Item #4578
"Ralph Philip Klein OC AOE was a Canadian politician and journalist who served as the 12th premier of Alberta and leader of the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta from 1992 until his retirement in 2006. Klein also served as the 32nd mayor of Calgary from 1980 to 1989." wiki. An early and uncommon 1980s placard, likely collected during the first of many of Klein's supercharged and successful Mayoral election campaigns, which later helped to install him as the Premier of Alberta.
