[Nelson, BC]: Nelson and District Women's Institute, (1924). Paperback. Cover title. Scarce cookbook published by the local branch of the Women's Institute, then presided over by Mrs. Francis W. Garland who, in 1920, became the first woman to be elected to Nelson city council and two years later, the first woman to run for Mayor. Her husband, W. Garland Foster, was the editor of the Nelson Daily News before heading off to serve with the 54th Kootenay Battalion in WW I. Introductory page with "Prepared by the Home Economics Committee" [of the Nelson and District Women's Institute] and a list of the eleven ladies who served on the committee. Saddle stapled heavy card wraps, title printed in black onto upper cover, narrow 8vo (8.75 inches tall), pp. [8 - ads], [9-11], 12-78, [79], [9 - ads], [12 - Blank Recipe Notes] - n.b. p. [50-51] are centerfold ads for Star Grocery and Meagher's Dry Goods, illustrated w. ads and decorative tailpieces. Volume in good only condition, with many a scrape, food stain, small crease or tear, personal notes and recipes added at rear, the three center bifolium (i.e. 12 pages) are present but loose from staples.
