"The Non-Partisan League expeditiously came into existence in Alberta in 1916 off the momentum of the election successes of the League in North Dakota and the rapid, overwhelming support it found in the neighbouring province of Saskatchewan. As a protest movement in North Dakota, the League quickly became a prominent political force, and it was soon strongly organized in at least five other states and three Canadian provinces. It began in 1915 and grew with such swiftness that, under the organization of A.C. Townley, it won the governorship and legislature in 1916. The League immediately spread north of the border, as the victory was acclaimed as a terrific example to Canadian farmers." Kelly Hannan, Alberta History, Winter 2004 (Vol. 52, Issue 1) Historical Society of Alberta. Very Good. Item #4337

In the 1917 provincial election, the Alberta Non-Partisan League ran Louise McKinney - a founding member of Canada's "Famous Five" group of women - under their banner. It was the first election in which women were allowed to vote. She won her seat and became the first woman elected to a legislature in the British Empire. The Alberta Non-Partisan was the "Official publication of the Non-Partisan League, an agrarian protest movement. From 17 November 1916 to [September?] 1917, issued under the title Nutcracker. [*n.b. 1st issue w. new title "The Alberta Non-Partisan" was issued Sept. 29, 1917] In 1919, Alberta Non-Partisan is absorbed by Western independent, the official publication of the United Farmers of Alberta."
