[Kootenay] The Hospital Aid Cook Book - Nelson, BC
Nelson, BC: The Women's Hospital Aid Society, c. 1910. Heavy Card. One of the earliest cookbooks to be published in British Columbia, and the second to be published in the interior, preceded only by "The Kamloops Cook Book" [c. 1908-10] by a slim margin. Saddle stapled linen-covered heavy card wraps, title printed in red onto upper cover, narrow 8vo (8.25 inches tall), pp. 83, [84-94 "Recipes - My Friends and My Own"], illustrated w. ads and tailpieces. Volume with bump to bottom edge, minor wear and stains, center bifolium leaf loose from staples but present, 4 of the ad pages at rear with pasted-in recipes, the section "Recipes - My Friends and My Own" is filled with the p.o.'s tidy manuscript recipes in both pencil and fountain pen ink. A very nice, complete copy. At Least Very Good. Item #4181
It is thought that Mrs. Buchanan (compiler) may have been the wife of John L. Buchanan, Manager of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Nelson and that Mrs. A.L. McCullough (compiler) was the wife of Andrew McCullough, listed in the Nelson section of Henderson's and Wrigley's British Columbia directories variously as a civil or hydraulic engineer and as a provincial land surveyor.
