Shipboard / Liverpool: Dominion Line / Seamen's Orphanage, 1897. Ephemera. Three pieces of Dominion Line ephemera from the RMS Labrador. 1) Passenger List, a single printed card measuring 7-1/4 x 4-5/8 inches wide w. "Proposed Sailings" for 1897 printed on verso, has some spotting and toning ; 2) S.S. Labrador Breakfast Menu for Sept. 29th, 1898, handwritten in blue fountain pen ink, verso blank with some toning to printed menu side ; 3) "Programme of Entertainment in Aid of the Seamen's Orphanage" held on the RMS Labrador on Nov. 4th, 1897. Program sheet measures 11 x 17-5/8 inch wide and is folded at center to make 4pp. The evening's two part event schedule is handwritten in blue fountain pen ink and has notations in pencil by an attendee. Program is toned and soiled w. edge tears. n.b. entertainment program images lack about a quarter inch on vertical edge due to scanner bed size. Good. Item #4105

The first move to establish such an institution was made by a group of leading Liverpool ship-owners in 1868. ... By 1899 there were 321 children in the orphanage, while 508 were receiving outdoor relief in the form of monetary grants and clothing. Children of all religious denominations were assisted, with preference given to orphans of British seamen connected with the Port of Liverpool." wiki. The Orphanage depicted on the front cover of the program (Newsham Park Hospital) is rated as the 4th Most Haunted Place in Liverpool.
