[Lacrosse - Japanese Canadian] Team Photograph of 1903 British Columbia Lacrosse Champions
New Westminster, BC: P.L. Okamura, 1903. Mounted Photograph. An historical piece of Sports Canadiana, executed in 1903 by a popular and well-known Japanese-Canadian photographer in New Westminster, BC. A composite photograph consisting of 20 individual portrait photographs and one each of the McBride and Allingham Cups - showing Mayor Keary as the President (with a relative, possibly his son "J. Keary" at his right hand) the Manager and the Field Captain (in a white jersey) for a total of 20 named team members. Photo measures 9.5 x 7.75 inches wide, card mount measures 14.5 x 11.75 inches wide. The photo has "New Westminster Intermediate Lacross Team 1903 / Champions of British Columbia" and "Okamura. Photo." in negative at lower right, the card mount has "P.L. Okamura / New Westminster, B.C." stamped within his painter's palette trademark. Both photo and mount show heavy wear, stains and soil, with this being an unusual case where the objects' historical importance trumps condition issues. Fair Only. Item #3837
Early lacrosse photos are scarce on the market, early and important Okamura composites, even more so.
