New York, NY: Winchell Printing Company, 1894 (1896). First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Publisher's original suede binding with title and decorations stamped in gilt onto upper board, t.e.g., folio (13-5/8 inches tall), color endpapers, silk ribbon marker, pp. unpaginated (173 [174 blank] n.b. index at rear does reference page numbers) illustrated throughout with line drawings and color vignettes - including portraits of important personalities from railway history and an extensive index of the locomotives discussed and illustrated, colophon. Most Illustrations are signed "W P Co. N.Y." Colophon notes that contrary to what is stated on t.p. the book was actually published in 1896 and not 1894. Author states that he was out of contact traveling via sledge in Siberia while working and reporting on the unfinished Trans-Siberian Railway for six months. Volume covers rubbed and worn, three leaves noted w. short closed marginal tears, brief damp stain to fore-edge and finger soil within. At Least Very Good. Item #3742

Uncommon when found in the publisher's original, velvet-like suede binding, as most copies appear to have either fallen to pieces, been parted out for scrap book enhancement or been rebound. A sweet copy, now in custom archival mylar jacket.
