From the preamble "The acquisition of Alaska was brought about largely through the efforts of W.H. Seward, Secretary of State, during the administration of President Johnson. In dersion of the project, his opponents spoke of the Territory as "Seward's Icebox" or "Seward's Folly." The succeeding pages indicate in some measure how far-sighted Seward was in securing for the United States this glorious territory."
