Steroview card, 3-1/4 inches tall x 6-5/8 inches wide, (both developed images measure aprox. 3 x 3 inches) with "The Moon Near the Last Quarter, / from Negatives by L.M. Rutherford. / Bierstadt Brothers Photographers N. Bedford, Mass." captioned in negative in both images - and - "S. F. Adams, Photographer, / New Bedeford, Mass." printed in black onto sides of card ; verso blank. Card slightly curled with some wear to edges, images with some foxing evident, light soil and 2 very faint creases. Good. Item #2173
S.F. Adams was active from 1866-1873 and was the successor to the Bierstadt Brothers. These lunar albumen prints date from that period - ca. 1870. A set of nine of Rutherford's lunar phases photographs (5 x 5 inches mounted on black cabinet cards) sold at Bonhams in 2012 for US$18,750 (2 other Rutherford lots sold for US$15,000 for 3 views and $22,500 for a single, signed view) ; offered here are two slightly smaller images (3 x 3 inches) developed from Rutherford's negatives, after Adams purchased them from the Bierstadt Brothers in 1866.
