[New England MC Club] Indian Motocycle and Yale Motorcycle Photographs

(New England): n.p. Photograph. A circa 1913 [?] collection of exceptional historical images from original photograph negatives, depicting early Indian and Yale motorcycles with riders in period New England biker gear. Nine uncredited photographic negatives, seven being 116 film (image c. 2-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches wide) and two being 105 film (image c. 2-1/4 x 3-1/4 inches wide), together with nine photographs developed from the negatives, each of which are mounted on archival board (c. 5 x 7 inches wide) and all but one of which reveal a beautiful image. Also included is the illustrated negative envelope folder from Iver Johnson Sporting Goods Company in Boston, Massachusetts with "Developing / Printing / Enlarging" services mentioned and "Our new building, corner of Washington and Cornhill." The envelope is in Good condition with a jagged tear to the front panel's upper left, a shorter tear to the lower left, minor soil and edge wear. The folder appears to be hand-dated "1-14-16" inside. Each negative is in Good condition, with one being over exposed. Good. Item #1678

From the photographic evidence, it is apparent that the images are likely from the Rhode Island/New England area, having the bike id numbers "R.I. 8171" or similar painted onto the rear fender of each motorcycle ; a "Providence" pennant flying from one of the side cars and a large "Cameron Car Co." sign [which operated in Rhode Island from 1902 to 1906] visible in the background of a group street shot. Other images show an Indian Motorcycle dealership storefront, rows of vintage Indian and Yale motorcycles, groups of motorcycle riders with pennants (club insignia - see Simmons [Parker House, 2010] p. 55.) pinned onto their jackets, a biker party with the ladies in long dresses and hats, Indian motorcycles gathered at a home, individuals sitting on or examining Indian motorcycles - one of which appears to be equiped with an uncommon racing tank. A professionally made high-resolution TIFF Archive CD is provided of all the images, enabling a close up examination of specific details of the bikes. Note: Please contact us if you wish to have the original Cellulose Nitrate negatives shipped as special arrangements will likely be necessary.
